Update:

Intriguing reports have emerged from Argentina indicating that José Hanan, the sporting director of Necaxa, has met with Fernando Gago in Buenos Aires.

Gago set for Necaxa as Larcarmón eyes exit?

According to David Medrano of Azteca Deportes, Gago has emerged as the leading candidate to take over the managerial position at the Liga MX club, with current head coach Nicolás Larcamón seemingly set to leave.

While nothing has been formalized, Cruz Azul are said to be preparing to hire Larcamón, as they seek a replacement for the outgoing Vicente Sánchez.

Having failed to reach an agreement with Guillermo Almada, who recently ended his tenure with Pachuca, the newly-crowned CONCACAF champions have instead turned their attentions to Larcamón, who recently coached Necaxa to good effect in the Clausura 2025 tournament.

Cruz Azul would have no issue paying the release clause for Larcamón, and negotiations are believed to be progressing.

And as they prepare for their coach’s departure, Necaxa have reportedly targeted Gago, who is best remembered in the Liga MX for his controversial departure from his first and so far only Mexican team, Chivas Guadalajara.

What happened between Gago and Chivas?

Gago took over Chivas at the beginning of 2024, initially making a positive impression. Albeit it did not perform spectacularly, the team functioned well under his command, reaching the semi-finals of the Clausura 2024 tournament, before being eliminated by eventual champions Club América.

However, after things began to deteriorate in the following tournament, he departed for Boca Juniors under a cloud.

After losing the Clásico Tapatío against Atlas, Gago declared that he had no agreement with Boca and would not leave Chivas - but then staged a dramatic U-turn when he signed for Los Xeneizes and returned to his homeland.

Gago’s tenure at Boca proved unsuccessful, however, leading to his dismissal as boss at the end of April.
