Aaron Rodgers switches jersey number for Pittsburgh Steelers
The veteran quarterback makes his long-awaited decision, giving Pittsburgh clarity before the 2025 Draft.

Aaron Rodgers is officially the new quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers. True to form, he took his time – perhaps more than necessary – to meditate on his decision to remain in the NFL. The Black and Gold were eager for a firm answer before the 2025 Draft, hoping to build their roster with certainty for the season ahead.

No 12 available for Rodgers at Steelers
The Steelers confirmed that Rodgers will wear the number 8 jersey next season. During his 18-year run with the Green Bay Packers, he wore No 12. Upon joining the New York Jets, he switched to No 8 – his college number – since 12 had been retired in honor of Joe Namath. In Pittsburgh, No 12 also carries deep legacy: no quarterback has worn it since Terry Bradshaw retired after the 1983 season. Bradshaw, now a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, remains a defining figure in Steelers history.
Rodgers spent nearly two decades in Green Bay before being traded to the Jets in April 2023. His debut in New York was cut short by a torn Achilles in his first season. Last year, the Jets ended with a disappointing 5–12 record, though Rodgers still completed 63% of his passes, throwing for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

The Steelers will open their 2025 campaign on the road against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on September 7 – a dramatic return for Rodgers against his former team and a face-off with ex-Steelers quarterback Justin Fields. They will also host Rodgers’ longtime team, the Green Bay Packers, at Acrisure Stadium on October 26. Eyes will be on the new man to see if he was worth the money.
